MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE

Big is not necessarily better in terms of sculpture, nor is a monument always a memorial, nor is it always public. Scale is a factor, of course, but the "bigness" of a work of art does not guarantee its success as art. Concept or idea is important if not imperative to a lasting statement: one to be remembered, to be impressed upon the psyche and one to challenge the consciousness of the viewer.

As a sculptor, I attempt to evolve the concept of "monument" from the immediate environment in which the work belongs. So rather than protesting against or assaulting that environment, it becomes a natural extension of its own surroundings. The "monument" becomes a reinforcement of and a positive celebration of the unification of its own environment, in addition to whatever, if any, external references it may convey. Larry Godwin
